BSO Accreditation

BSO Accreditation

ESP is delighted to be a strategic partner of the Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO), the only membership association exclusively for leaders of BSO accredited schools.

The term “British Schools Overseas” (BSO) may only be officially used by a school that has been inspected within the past three academic years by one of the inspectorates approved by the UK government’s Department for Education (DfE) and has been judged to have met an acceptable standard.  BSO inspections are based on the standards used to inspect the majority of independent (i.e. private) schools in England and Wales. There are more than 160 BSOs around the world at any time.

In order to achieve BSO status, a school has to have been inspected, within the last three academic years, by an approved provider.  As part of the ongoing development of the BSO system,  providers that wished to continue to offer inspections had to be re-approved: As of 1 September 2017, the folllowing providers are approved:

  • Cambridge Education
  • EDT Education Trust (Formerly CfBT)
  • Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI)
  • Penta international
  • School Inspection Service (SIS)

Inspectorates are required to publish on their websites,  the results of all inspections for the past three years.  Further details can be found at
