Which Schools Can Deliver DfE Statutory Induction Overseas?

There were no changes to the statutory eligibility of international Induction with the introduction of the Early Career Framework in 2021. Induction under ECF remains, as it has done since 2012, exclusively available internationally to those schools who:

• Have undertaken a BSO inspection within the last 6 years; and

• Have full membership of at least one of the following DfE recognised membership associations for British international schools (AoBSO, BSME, COBIS, FOBISIA, LAHC or NABSS); and

• Are working with a DfE registered Appropriate Body (AB) to support their Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

If your school does not fulfil all of the DfE criteria above you may wish to consider the ESP Recently Qualified Teacher (RQT) Programme to support inexperienced teachers within your school. Evidence gained from the RQT Programme, alongside self-reflection against the Teachers’ Standards may support a potential shortened induction in an eligible school home or abroad in the future.

Statutory Induction regulations

From September 2021 teachers completing their ECT Induction overseas are entitled (by law) to a 2 year programme of support including:

• Access to the Early Career Framework supported, and facilitated by weekly meetings with an ECT Mentor;

• Half-termly lesson observations and the ability to observe outstanding practitioners;

• Termly assessment by the school's ECT Induction Tutor;

• Support from a DfE Appropriate Body (AB) like ourselves throughout their ECT Induction.
