PGCE Education Independent Distance Learning (PGCE)

The PGCE completed internationally offers distance learning teacher training for staff overseas and gives them the ability to achieve a globally recognised qualification from a UK University thus expanding future career possibilities.

What is the PGCE?

ESP works with the University of Sunderland to offer the PGCE to teachers in international schools worldwide.  This is an internationally recognised teaching qualification but does not award QTS.

The course blends applied teaching theory and practice in three taught modules and one extended teaching practice module. It has been developed so that it can be delivered to primary, secondary and post-16 teachers and to any subject specialism.

It is a 36-week full-time course, completed in one academic year which can be undertaken both in the UK and in international settings.

Course Structure

The programme is split into 2 semesters and has 4 core modules. There is 1 taught module, 2 research modules, and 1 teaching practice module with a wide variety of teaching methods with tasks including required reading, directed activities and self- assessments.  There are online discussion forums where trainees are invited to debate current issues relevant to the module content and, if you live close to other students on the course, we encourage you to form a study group.

All teaching practice through the programme is work-based and conducted entirely in a school or other educational institution that you have secured a placement at or currently working at. This is supported by mentors and staff from the University with assessment of both theoretical and practical elements of the course.  Assessment takes place through written assignments, a profile of evidence of teaching standards and observed teaching.

Important to Note

Please note that QTS is a requirement for teaching in state schools in England, and also a number of international schools. The PGCE completed overseas does not award QTS.

Teachers with 2 or more years teaching experience are able to explore entry onto the Assessment Only (AO) Route to QTS in the term following their PGCE. Teachers who don’t have 2 years’ teaching experience or need more development and support in order to become eligible for the AO Route, ESP runs a PGCE Consolidation programme.
