National Professional Qualification for Leading Teaching (NPQLT)

NPQLT is one of a new series of specialist DfE NPQ programmes launching in September 2021.

By engaging in NPQLT teachers can (over a period of 12 months), understand what outstanding teaching looks like and use this knowledge to become a high performing leader of teaching within their school.

What is the NPQLT?

Leading teaching is complex and professionals looking to lead teaching need to have a deep understanding of their context, community and the pupils and adults they work with. They also need to have expertise across a number of specialist areas related to their role (e.g. curriculum and assessment) and in approaches that, through working with their colleagues, enable their school to keep improving (e.g. professional development and implementation).

Leading teaching requires an understanding of the relationship between the different specialist areas, how they can change over time and how to contribute to a culture and conditions in which staff and pupils are able to thrive, all while maintaining the highest professional conduct as set out in the Teachers’ Standards.

NPQLT gives candidates all of the essential knowledge, skills and concepts that underpin successful leadership of teaching including:

  • How to contribute to the creation of a culture of high expectations across the school;

  • How to support colleagues to plan effective lessons;

  • How to support colleagues to avoid common assessment pitfalls;

  • How to encourage colleagues to use high quality, reliable assessment without creating unnecessary workload.

Who is NPQLT suitable for?

NPQLT is for teachers with at least 2 years teaching experience. NPQLT is suitable for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase.

The fully blended learning approach combined with performance coaching and enrichment activities make this an exciting and valuable professional development opportunity for those who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching within their school.

The NPQLT qualification is aligned to Masters credits and can act as a springboard on to Liverpool Hope University’s MA in Leading in Education or the MBA in Educational Leadership.

Registration for the NPQLT cohort due to commence in September 2022 will open shortly. If you are interested in joining the next cohort of NPQLTD please email mark@espeducation.co.uk to register interest.

“ESP's NPQs filled a gap in the market when no other provider did; we are very pleased that they have supported BSME's outcomes of high-quality professional learning which supports career progression at excellent rates.”

Olivia Roth, CEO BSME (British Schools in the Middle East)

How does it work?

There are two delivery options when taking the NPQLT. Participants will usually complete the qualification within 12 months and undertake a summative assessment task at the end of this period.

Participants can choose to complete the programme via our traditional blended delivery model or via an online-only option. Our blended delivery model consists of 3 face-to-face events, online study, webinars and coaching. The online-only delivery option replaces the face-to-face events with facilitated webinars as well as extra tutor support making this programme accessible for all schools in the world, irrespective of location.

We run two intakes of NPQLT each academic year with these cohorts commencing in the autumn and spring terms.
